Hiking is, undoubtedly, one of the most popular outdoor physical activities – not only in the US but even worldwide. A huge population of hikers loves to engage in this fun and healthy physical activity. But the best thing about hiking is that there is no limit or restrictions – anyone can be a hiker. As a matter of fact, hikers come in all shapes and sizes!

On a serious note, hiking is a kind of sport that is open to all – there is no age limit or gender restrictions for you to engage in the activity. Whether you are young or old, rich or poor, your hiking trial doesn’t judge. As long as you are looking to make healthy life choices and want to enjoy the great outdoors and get a hiking experience, you can hit the trail without any doubts or worries. And this is the reason why hiking trails are full of a diverse range of people.

If you are a hiker or have been on a hiking trip before, you will know what we are talking about. The activity is so intriguing, fun, and healthy that people from all backgrounds and ages are compelled to engage in it and enjoy being there.

But the beauty of it all is that not everyone you meet on the trail sees hiking the same way you do. Every hiker has a different approach to hiking, different hiking styles, and different expectations or ambitions for it as well. But together up there, every hiker adds their own touch to the hiking trail.

Perhaps it is also a significant part of the activity that you get to share the hiking trail with various people and observe how so many different people enjoy the same activity in their own way. And that is exactly what we are discussing here. Today, let’s talk about the types of hikers you are likely to meet on the hiking trail and see which one you can relate to the most.

5 Types of Hikers

1. The Ambitious Yet Nervous Beginner Hiker

Every time you are on trial, there is likely to be at least one person who is there for the first time. This person is not always young; beginners can be of all ages – in fact, we have seen some middle-aged and old-aged people taking their first hike when they’re finally free of responsibilities and want to live for themselves.

These beginners appear ambitious but also nervous at every step of the way. They are usually accompanied by their trusting ones who help and guide them, which is what gives away that it’s their first time.

Nonetheless, these hikers are the ones trying their best to appear confident but are actually nervous. But apart from this, they are super amused by everything around them and the beauty of mother nature.

2. The Adventure Junkie Hiker

Every hiking group has at least one adventure junkie who is on the hiking trail just for the love of it. Their reason for being on trial is not that hiking is a good activity or because they want to spend time with their friends and family – their attraction is the pure adventure and adrenaline rush they have when they are up there. These people enjoy various activities and are always ahead of everyone else. Whether they are in a group or out for a solo day hike, you will find them trying out new things and kicking off their fear. For example, if you are in the mountains, these are hikers. You will be the one you will find climbing the mountains every chance they get – the hardcore climbers.

3. The Enthusiastic and Inspired Teen Hiker

Teen hikers are our personal favorite hikers to watch on a hiking trip. You get a different type of joy when you see young blood, all enthusiastic and inspired to reach new lengths. If you are an experienced hiker or have been hiking with your friends and family from a young age, watching these teenagers is likely to bring back old memories for you.

This group of hikers will compel you to reminisce over old times and think about what for you into hiking. Teen hikers are mostly accompanied by their parents; they are super enthusiastic and love exploring around. You will see them doing various activities other than just hiking – chances are you’ll also play a few games with them. Hint: scavenger hunt is the most popular game in this group – no biases!

4. The Fitness Freak Hiker

We all know hiking is a healthy physical activity, and everyone who hikes, for no matter what reason, does have this added benefit that comes with hiking in their mind as well. But for the fitness freak hiker, getting physically fit and healthy is the sole purpose of the activity, which is why hiking is a significant part of their routine.

If you go to the trail daily, you will find them there every day; this group of hikers is super active, and you will see them focused on the activity instead of wasting time on anything else. They are usually early risers and reach their track before anyone else; you might also witness them working out and doing activities like skipping or jumping jacks to boost themselves and warm up.

5. The Boomer Story-Telling Hiker

Old people are a rare sight on a  hiking trail, but we do come across at least a couple of senior hikers. These are the experienced hikers who have a different kind of love for the activity. They have spent their life on the trail and, despite their age, love to keep themselves fit and healthy by pushing themselves forward each day.

They are usually found on the trek to give away the wisdom that they earned after years of spending their life in mother nature – be it the forest or the mountains, these experienced hikers have stories to tell about them all. If you ever come across an experienced hiker, trust us when we say you will have a great time going over their old memories and getting some good hiking tips from them.
