What is Spearfishing?

Spearfishing is often confused with waiting along the shore and using a speargun to catch prey as it approaches nearby. While this may be one form of spearfishing, in reality is a lot more than that. It requires the individual to swim into the water, hold their breath, and be patient.

Once a spearfish approaches, it’s all about cashing in on the moment and shooting your shot with precision.

It’s quite literally the same as underwater hunting. You can take a deep dive or start diving in shallow water, to begin with. Practicing holding your breath is key here – once you’re sufficiently skilled at doing this, you can give freediving a try without any problem.

The important aspect to be aware of is obtaining a fishing license first. Without this in the mix, you may be fined for giving spearfishing a try.

Spearfishing Types

Spearfishing can be of three types, shallow water spearfishing, freediving spearfishing, and scuba diving spearfishing. Let’s have a look at what each has to offer.

1. Shallow Water Spearfishing

This is the easiest form of spearfishing. You can do it from above the water. A boat or kayak can also be used for this – but the thrill and experience of what spearfishing is all about comes from freediving or scuba diving spearfishing.

2. Freediving Spearfishing

For this, having your breathing technique on point is essential. From then on, equalizing to balance out your weight in the water comes next. The process of doing so is similar to blowing the air out from your ears as you do while on an airplane.

From then on, being stealthy and keeping your movements slow is key in locating and locking in your target!

3. Scuba Dive Spearfishing

This is the type of spearfishing where the proper equipment and skill is a must have.  A wetsuit and scuba gear are spearfishing essentials for this type of spearfishing. And, the best part is that you get to study the movement of the fish and truly understand aquatic life from under the water!

Expect your dives to be longer here as well. Practice makes perfect, so be sure to get your breathing technique on point before heading out for this type of spearfishing.

Spearfishing Equipment

Here are some of the spearfishing gear items you will need to get started

  • Wetsuit
  • Spearfishing fins
  • Snorkel and mask
  • Weapon of choice – Speargun, Pole spears, or a Hawaiian Sling
  • Float – usually, spearguns and pole spears have these attached to them
  • Weighted belt

You can find all the spearfishing equipment at a local fishing store or order the spearfishing accessories online. Read up on the reviews before making the purchase though, you don’t want to end up with a damaged or dupe speargun that will only work for a limited period of time.

Safety Tips for Spearfishing

Here are some safety tips to keep in mind while spearfishing.

1. Avoid Spearfishing Alone

Always have a spearfishing buddy with you while spearfishing. This is in case you get attacked by a big fish or find yourself running out of air – the buddy will be there to help you out.

The risk of being dragged away by strong currants is also common while spearfishing – you’ll be glad to have a friend by your side in case this happens to you.

2. Keep Your Weapon Low

Avoid pointing your speargun or pole spear in the direction of another spear fisherman. You don’t want to accidentally pull the trigger and injure someone unintentionally.

3. Stay In Calm Waters

Avoid going to areas with a lot of boats and people. The sound of the boats will drive the fish away and render your spearfishing efforts useless.

Fish during sunrise and sunset, fish tend to be active during these times. And it’s a lot safer for you to be fishing while there is some sunlight.

4. Practice Holding Your Breath

On average you may be expected to hold your breath for up to  30 seconds underwater. Hence, it is always recommended to work on your holding your breath for longer. Start small by trying to hold your breath for 10 seconds and slowly build up.
